Customs Court sends suspect on physical remand involved in diamonds smuggling

KARACHI: The Customs Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi sent suspect namely Muhammad Javad son of Haji Abdul Razzaqe to the customs department on physical remand, who was booked in a case of attempting to smuggle contraband 202 crates (cut and polished) diamonds worth Rs6,060,000.

During the hearing, investigation officer produced the above mentioned suspect before the court and informed that on a credible information, a passenger, later on identified as Muhammad Javad, holding Pakistani Passport No-AE-8671584 arrived from Bangkok via Thai Airways flight No-TG-341, was diverted from the customs baggage scanning machine to the customs examination counter for detail examination, he was therefore asked to declare if he was carrying any contraband/ prohibited goods in his baggage or on his person, to which he denied.

Investigation officer further informed the court that however, being dissatisfied with the passenger’s declaration, during his body search, one pink color envelop duly wrapped with clear adhesive tape recovered from back pocket of pent worn by him, the said revered envelop was cut open and found two polythene small bags wrapped with 4 butter paper to contain diamonds (said to be) weighing 41 grams (gross).

He said that after formalities, diamonds were taken into custody and he was arrested by the customs officials, he stated that prosecution needs further investigations, therefore, court may send back him to customs department.

After his arguments, court sent back him to customs department on physical remand and directed investigation officer to produce him on next date of hearing along with progress report.

Case was registered against above mentioned suspect for violation of under section 2 (s) 16 & 178 of the Customs Act, 1969 punishable under clauses (8) (9) & (89) of section 156 (i) ibid.
