Customs Court sends suspect to jail booked in betel nuts smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court sent suspect namely Rozi Khan to Central Jail on judicial remand, who was booked in a case of attempting to smuggle non-duty paid 13, 176 kilograms betel nuts etc.

On July 12, 2019, investigation office of the case produced the above mentioned suspect before the court and informed that on actionable information, officials intercepted a Hino truck bearing registration number TPK-971 and asked them to checking.

He further submitted that during the search, prosecution recovered 13,176 kilogram betel nuts and other goods which were smuggling from Baluchistan to Karachi for their illegal disposal, he argued that suspect was asked to produce lawful documents, however, he failed to produce any lawful documents, therefore, after fulfillment of legal formalities, he was taken into custody and goods also were seized.

After the hearing  court sent him to jail and directed investigation officer to complete investigation and submit charge sheet on next date of hearing.

According to the prosecution, case was registered for violation of under section 2(s) 157 (2) of Customs Act, 1969 punishable under clause (89) of section 156 (i) ibid read with section 156 (2) of the Customs Act, 1969 further read with section 3 (1) of Imports & Export Control Act, 1950.
