Customs Court sends suspect involved in betel nuts smuggling to jail

KARACHI: The Customs Court sent suspects namely Syed Muhammad Shafiq son of Khuda Nazar and Syed Aziz Ullah son of Syed Abdul Sattar to Central Jail on judicial remand, who were booked in a case of attempting to smuggle non-duty paid 11,794 kilogram betel nuts.

On August 10, 2018, Investigation Officer Muhammad Mehmood, and naib subedar of Pakistan Coast Guards produced the above mentioned suspects before the court and informed that on credible information, officials of the Pakistan Coast Guards intercepted Hino truck bearing registration number TLG-919 and during the search, recovered 11,794 kilogram betel nuts from truck.

He submitted that on the spot, officials asked them to produce legal documents, however, they failed to produce any lawful documents, therefore, after the formalities, the said accused, goods and truck were taken into custody.

After the hearing, court sent them to jail and directed investigation officer to complete investigations and submit challan on next date of hearing. The court also directed jail authority to produce them before the court on next date of hearing.

According to the prosecution, case was registered against above mentioned suspects for violation of under Section 2 (s) and 16, 156 (1) (8) (89) and 157 of the Customs Act, 1969.
