Customs Court sends suspected betel nut smugglers to jail

KARACHI: The Customs Court sent suspects namely Abdul Rhim son of Shahdad Khan and Kalim Ullah son of Shah Muhammad, who were arrested in a case of attempting to smuggle non-duty paid betel nuts etc, to Central Jail on judicial remand.

On December 6, 2018, investigation officer of Customs Preventive produced the above-mentioned suspects along with First Information Report (FIR) and submitted that on an actionable information, a team of customs officials intercepted passenger bus (New Shandar Coach) bearing registration no BSB-808 and recovered 101,000 pouches of One-2-One brand, Indian gutka, 291,840 pouches VM-88 gutka made in India total valuing at Rs5,892,600,  2070 kilograms betel nuts worth Rs550,620.

He further informed the court that during the raid, accused were asked to produce lawful documents, however, they failed to provide any lawful documents, therefore, customs officials seized said goods and suspects also were taken into custody.

After hearing, the court sent them to jail and directed jail authorities to produce them before the court on next date of hearing. The court also directed investigation officer to complete investigations and submit challan on next date of hearing.
