Customs Court sends suspects to jail involved in betel nuts smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court sent suspects namely Ihsan Ullah son of Muhammad Ullah and Abdul Rahman son of Abdul Baqi to jail on judicial remand, who were involved in a case of attempting to smuggle contraband betel nuts and others goods.

On July 16, Investigation Officer Saddam Hussain produced the above-mentioned suspects before the court and informed that officials of Pakistan Rangers intercepted five Suzuki pick-ups loaded with betel nuts and other goods at Maripure Road Karachi and informed the customs officials, who reached there and search the pick-ups.

Investigation officer further informed that during the search of 5 pick-ups, customs officials found 12 kg betel nuts, 726,750 pouches Rajni brand Indian-origin gutka and after the formalities, customs authorities seized the goods along with 5 pick-ups. He further submitted that show cause notices were issued and displayed on customs office against owners of vehicles as well as owners of said goods, accordingly, efforts are in progress to arrest the absconding accused persons and their associates.

He informed the court that prosecution has completed investigations from them. After hearing, the court sent them to jail and directed investigation officer to submit charge-sheet against them on next date of hearing.

Case was registered for violation of under section 2 (s) 156 (2) 157 (2) and 178 of Customs Act, 1969 punishable under clause 8 & 89 of section 156 (1) ibid read with section (i) of Imports & Exports Control Act, 1950 and others related laws complainant by Muhammad Shafiq Senior Preventive Officer Customs House Karachi.
