Customs Court sends suspected betel nuts smugglers to lock-up

KARACHI: The Customs Court sent suspects namely Munir Ahmed son of Basham Khan and Abdullah son of Muhammad Younas to Pakistan Coast Guards lock up on physical remand who were involved and booked in a case of attempting to smuggle non-duty paid 6529 kg betel nuts and other goods.

On September 12, 2018, Investigation Officer, Hafiz Muhammad Amir of Pakistan Coast Guards produced the above mentioned suspects before the court and informed that on a actionable information, a team of Pakistan Coast Guards intercepted a Hino truck bearing registration number: TKV-329 and recovered above mentioned goods from the said vehicle. The investigation officer further informed the court that after the search, accused were asked to produce lawful documents on said goods, which he failed to produce.

He stated that after the formalities, suspects were arrested and said goods along with vehicle were seized by the Pakistan Coast Guards. He further submitted that prosecution needs further investigation for arrest of owner of said goods, therefore, court may sent them back to customs luck-up on physical remand.

After the hearing, court granted their physical remand and directed investigation officer to produce them on next date of hearing along with progress report.

According to the prosecution, case was registered against them for violation of under Section 2 (s) and 16, 156 (1) (8) (89) and 157 of Customs Act, 1969.
