Customs delists 71 importers engaged in illegal trade

MANILA: The Bureau of Customs has delisted some 71 importers and brokers found to be engaged in illegal dealings but Commissioner Nicanor Faeldon said they have three days after receiving their notices to appeal the decision.

Faeldon said five of the importers have so far filed their appeals.

He said the names of the importers would be published even as he explained that the reason for this is to inform the public and not part of a “shame campaign.”

“It’s not shame campaign because the public needs to know. They are smugglers. When you mis-declared your commodities and were seized because of violation of customs laws you try to smuggle commodities,” he said.

“Sabi namin (We said) previously we would be delisting importers, brokers who practice illicit trade (over) the past six years,” he said.

The BOC chief added that the records were reviewed manually since the agency has no electronic record of importers and brokers.
