Customs foils attempt to smuggle foreign currency to Bangkok

LAHORE: A Customs Vigilance team detained a foreign national at the Allama Iqbal International Airport, who was set to depart for Bangkok with an unusual amount of US dollars.

Sources told Customs Today that Customs team foiled the attempt of currency smuggling when Jong Woli was making an attempt to smuggle currency from Lahore to Bangkok via Thai Airways Flight 366.

The suspect has been shifted to unidentified place for interrogation and is in custody of Pakistan Customs, while a case has been registered against him under Pakistan Customs Act 1969.

Deputy Collector Naveedur Rehman Bhagvi was also present on the spot when customs officials arrested the accused person from the airport.

It is pertinent to mention here that according to revised rules of the State Bank of Pakistan regarding foreign exchange, a passenger can carry up to $10,000 or equivalent notes of another currency while going abroad.

The SBP also clarified that People travelling to or from Pakistan can carry Rs10,000 in cash as earlier the limit was Rs3,000.

Customs team will produce the accused before the Court of Customs Taxation and Anti Smuggling on Saturday for getting his physical remand for further investigations and prosecution under Pakistan Customs Act of 1969.

Customs Preventive has foiled many currency smuggling attempts at Allama Iqbal International Airport and has recovered millions of dollars that were being attempted to smuggle from Lahore to other countries.
