Customs I&I foils bid to smuggle betel nuts worth Rs5.25m

KARACHI: Directorate of Customs Intelligence & Investigation Karachi has seized a large quantity of smuggled betel nut loaded in a Hino truck worth Rs5.25 million.

Sources told Customs Today that Director Customs I&I Irfan Jawed credible information that certain unscrupulous elements would attempt to transport smuggled betel nut for distribution in Karachi.

Subsequently, the Customs Intelligence staff intercepted a Hino truck at Northern Bypass Toll Plaza. The vehicle was loaded with betel nut. The driver of the vehicle and his associate failed to provide any documents proving lawful possession of the goods.

The value of the seized betel nut (5.0 tons) is estimated at Rs3.75 million while the value of the seized vehicle is Rs5.25 million. A case has been lodged and investigations are under way.
