Customs I&I foils bid to smuggle foreign origin fabric worth Rs62.8m

KARACHI: Directorate of Customs Intelligence and Investigation (I&I) has registered an FIR against M/s Courier X Company, M/s Malik Farooq Goods Transport Company and several others. The value of the seized goods and vehicle comes to Rs62.8 million.

Sources said that credible information was received through Director General I&I Faiz Ahmed to Director Karachi Saquif Saeed and Additional Directors Afzaal Wattoo that huge quantity of smuggled foreign origin fabric, would be smuggled through a courier company M/s. Courier-X, P.E.C.H.S, Karachi showing it as legitimate goods to up-country for its further disposal.

Subsequently, on the instructions of Deputy Director Inamullah Wazir, ASO team of I&I Karachi started surveillance and intercepted one lssuzu Truck loaded with container stuffed with foreign origin assorted cloth packed in bundles opposite Habitt near godown situated at PECHS, Block-6, Karachi.

The driver and cleaner of aforesaid truck namely Muhammad Qasim and Muhammad Ishaq informed that assorted cloth are stuffed in the container which was loaded from the godown / warehouse of M/s. Courier-X, P.E.C.I.S, Karachi for further transportation to Lahore. They couldn’t provide any evidence to prove the legal import and possession of the goods.

On pointing by the driver, I&I Karachi staff visited the godown from where the truck was loaded and recovered large quantity of foreign origin assorted cloth comprising gents suiting cloth, ladies georgette/suiting cloth, curtain cloth, parachute cloth and artificial leather. The goods were seized and FIR was lodged. Investigations are underway.

It may be mentioned here the courier companies are involved in moving smuggled goods. Reports were lodged earlier against TCS and DHL for moving smuggled goods.
