Customs I&I impounds smuggled betel nut worth Rs18.06m near Hub Chowk

KARACHI: Directorate of Customs Intelligence and Investigation has seized huge quantity of smuggled betel nut (Areca) worth Rs18.06 million.

According to the details, Director Irfan Jawaid received credible information that attempt would be made to transport smuggled betel nut from Baluchistan to Karachi.

He constituted a team under the supervision of Additional Director Ali Zaman Gardezi which also include Principal Appraiser Syed Irshad Ali Shah to foil the attempt.

Subsequently, a truck was heading towards Hub Check Post, which was signaled to stop, but the driver drove on. Customs staff chased the truck and took under custody, the driver however managed to escape.

The vehicle was examined and led to recovery of large quantity of smuggled betel nut. Since no one came to claim the goods, the same were seized. Investigations are underway.
