Customs I&I posts 151.19pc growth in seizure cases during FY2020-21

KARACHI: Directorate of Customs Intelligence and Investigation during anti-smuggling drive seized goods worth Rs8.5 billion during FY2020-21. The figures showed 151.19 percent growth as compared to Rs3.39 billion in the previous year.

The performance of Customs Intelligence and Investigation under the supervision of Director Khalil Yousufani and comprising Additional Director Rana Tasleem, Deputy director Amjad Rajpar, Additional Director Sheeraz Ahmad, Rana Aftab, Toseef Gorchani, speaks highly of the tremendous efforts put forth by its staff.

According to the details, the performance of Enforcement Wing of I&I Karachi was also exceptional as a total number of 78 seizures / contraventions were effected valuing Rs15.632 Billion involving duty / taxes of Rs4.499 Billion during FY 2020-21 as compared to value of of Rs.4.576 Billion involving duty taxes of Rs1.616 Billion in FY 2019-20.

Besides, an amount of Rs303.614 million has also been realized through auction/ seizure/ on-line monitoring as compared to Rs280.733 million realized in FY 2019-20 which is 8.15 % higher.

Hectic efforts were also made for disposing of warehoused goods through destruction as huge quantity of confiscated goods were lying in the state warehouse and even out of the premises of state warehouse due to scarcity of space and element of pilferage could not be ruled out.

The officers and staff carried out stocktaking exercise day and night and goods ripe for auction were segregated and are being auctioned. So far large volume of such goods have been disposed of by destruction and auction. The auction is also fixed on every alternate Friday since January 01, 2021.

Customs Intelligence and Investigation Karachi has also stretched its efforts on other fields like successfully acquiring an already encroached plot measuring about 4,034 sq. yds situated at ST-3/3, Block 20. Federal ‘B’ Area, Karachi and is being utilized to park the seized vehicles.

Further, the Directorate has also acquired a plot from KDA measuring one acre (approx.) at ST-15, Sector 6F, Mehran Town, Korangi, Karachi and it is also being used as state warehouse.
