ISLAMABAD: The Directorate of Customs Intelligence and Investigation has confiscated 4,800 kilogramme of smuggled ladies cloth worth Rs 2.3 million, besides arresting two suspects during an action in Rawalpindi.
The intelligence officials received information that a huge cache of smuggled cloth would be supplied to Rawalpindi from Peshawar and later the cloth will be distributed all over the country.
To check veracity of information, the authorities formed a team under the supervision of Intelligence Officer Maqbool Ahmad. The team established check post on motorway with the assistance of Motorways Police near Chakri.
The officials intercepted a Bedford Truck bearing Registration No E-1308 for checking that led to the recovery of ladies cloth. At that time, the truck was being driven by Salman Khan son of Mehrab Khan, while another person Adnan son of Derwaish was accompanying him.
On demanding of import documents, both persons claimed ownership of the cloth but they could not produce documents showing legal import of the recovered item.
Therefore, the officials impounded the truck along with cloth considering it smuggled on under Section 168 of the Customs Act, 1969 and registered a case against both accused persons. Both have been sent behind the bars, while investigation in underway.
Officials said that noose has been tightened around smugglers in order to weed out menace of smuggling in region, adding that smuggling was imposing negative impact on national economy and local industries.
