Customs JIAP foils bid to smuggle jewellery, cosmatics worth Rs58m

KARACHI: Collectorate of Customs team deputed at Jinnah International Airport (JIAP) thwarted an attempt to smuggle goods worth approximately Rs58 million during an operation at the international arrivals of Jinnah International Airport (JIAP), Karachi.

The recovered items included 1,185 grams of gold jewellery along with commercial quantities of cosmetics, perfumes and handbags.

Sources said that while performing routine duties, the Customs SPS based on profiling and suspicion diverted a passenger en route from USA via Etihad Airlines to red channel from the green channel.

The scanning machine indicated the presence of commercial quantity of cosmetics, perfumes, bags and Gold jewellery. The passenger was moved to examination counter, wherein the physical examination of baggage of passenger resulted into recovery of gold jewellery and commercial quantity of cosmetics, perfumes and handbags.

The jeweller was called for examination and valuation of Gold jewellery. The jeweller verified Gold jewellery and weighed the gold jewellery around 1185 grams.

FIR has been lodged against the passenger under the relevant provisions of the Customs Act, 1969.
