Customs Judge Soofia Latif imposes fine on gutka smuggler

KARACHI: Customs and Taxation Court Special Judge Soofia Latif imposed a Rs 100,000 fine on an accused who pleaded guilty to attempting to smuggle Nepal-origin JM gutha (betel nut).

The court took into account the confinement that the accused undergone from September 10 to September 22 and fined him Rs 100,000.

Taking a lenient view, Judge Soofia Latif convicted Ahmedullah s/o Naimatullah who was caught with 194,000 pouches of the smuggled gutka worth Rs 3,880,800.

The crime was registered by the Model Customs Collectorate Preventive’s Anti-Smuggling Organisation, HQs, Karachi.

According to details the ASO staff intercepted a car (AZZ-783) on September 10 at 10pm near Dua Restaurant, Mauripur Road along with 40 plastic bags of Nepal-origin JM gutkha.

The value of the seized goods totalled Rs 5,080,000, including Rs 3,880,800 for the value of gutka and Rs 1,200,000, the value of the car. The accused was released after he paid the fine.
