Customs officers find 152 pounds of liquid meth in SUV at border

ARIZONA: Officers with US Customs and Border Protection in Arizona confiscated drugs worth $2 million in separate incidents over the weekend of April 23, including 152 pounds of liquid meth hidden in the fuel tank of an SUV, officials said.

Customs and Border Protection officers at the Port of Nogales seized more than 500 pounds of drugs and arrested eight people attempting to smuggle illegal drugs such as cocaine, heroin, marijuana and methamphetamine, according to a CBP release.

In one incident on April 23, officers searched a Ford SUV belonging to a 29-year-old Mexican woman and her 19-year-old passenger and found 152 pounds of liquid meth hidden in the vehicle’s gas tank. A narcotics-detection K9 alerted officers to the liquid meth, which cost an estimated $457,000, according to CBP.

Other noteworthy seizures included: 140 pounds of marijuana found in a van, 20 pounds of heroin and 15 pounds of meth found in a 51-year-old Tucson woman’s SUV and 27 pounds of meth discovered in a Phoenix woman’s BMW, the agency said.

“This level of smuggling activity lends itself to the fact that drug smugglers don’t take days off,” said Joe Agosttini, acting Nogales Port director.

In total, CBP said it seized $2 million worth of drugs, including 316 pounds of methamphetamine, 29 pounds of cocaine, 25 pounds of heroin and 140 pounds of marijuana.
