Customs officers seize 25 undeclared firearms at US-Manitoba border

TORONTO: At the US-Manitoba border, officers seized 25 undeclared firearms, including 11 prohibited firearms, largely from U.S. citizens trying to come north during the summer. In July, a Florida man spent three days in jail and received a $13,000 fine for smuggling a prohibited and fully loaded .22 calibre revolver.

In October, one man was sentenced to 21 days in jail and a $4,000 fine for concealing a 9mm handgun and 10 undeclared prohibited overcapacity magazines in his vehicle. A second man was sentenced to 12 days in jail and a $9,000 fine for attempting to smuggle a prohibited loaded .45 calibre handgun along with 11 undeclared magazines. Both men were from North Carolina.

In September, officers at the Lena border crossing in southwest Manitoba arrested a 33-year-old North Dakota man found hiding under a blanket in the rear of a vehicle. The man had been denied entry into Canada the previous day for having a criminal record. He was sentenced to 60 days in jail.

Meanwhile at the James Armstrong Richardson International Airport, Winnipeg officers made 37 drug-related seizures.
