Customs PMBQ lodges FIR against importer for smuggling of betel nuts under garb of household goods

KARACHI: The Customs Court directed investigation officer of Collectorate of Customs Enforcement and Compliance and Deputy Collector of Customs Port Muhammad Bin Qasim to arrest the accused suspect namely Shahid Mahmood son of Muhammad Ayub and produce him before the court, who was allegedly involved in smuggling of contraband goods

On 1 January 2021, investigation officer of Collectorate of Customs Enforcement and Compliance Port Muhammad Bin Qasim submitted first information report and informed the court that a consignment covered under auction lot was assigned for examination, prior to the examination of the consignment, the relevant papers were scrutinized which revealed that the said consignment was imported by consignee Shahid Mahmood from Dammam, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on vessel ESPERANZAN declaring therein 217 packages personal effects and household goods.

He further informed the court that this consignment was imported by the above- named consignee under personal baggage scheme which arrived at Qasim International Container Terminal QICT, Port Muhammad Bin Qasim, Karachi, however, no one came forward to claim the ownership of file the baggage declaration of the said container within stipulated time.

He further stated that during the search of the container, customs officials found 13180 kg betel nuts, a water dispenser with refrigerator, 576 pairs of long shoes sniper, 21 no mattress single bed, 10 mattress double bed, 20 wooden chairs, 04 baby ben, 05 metallic folding chairs, 04 sofa set 03-seater, 07 tables and other goods.

He submitted that after the formalities, customs officials seized the goods along with household goods and lodged first information report against the above -mentioned suspect, who is still absconder and will be produced when arrested.
