Customs PMBQ thwarts attempt to smuggle 36.2kgs heroin worth $25m to Canada

KARACHI: Collectorate of Customs Exports, Port Mohammad Bin Qasim (PMBQ) foiled a bid to smuggle 36.2 kilograms of heroin which was tactfully concealed in an export consignment destined for Montreal, Canada. The approximate value of seized heroin is Rs361 million (US$25 million) in international market.

Addressing a press conference Chief Collector Enforcement South, Dr. Saifuddin Junejo along with Collector Customs Exports PMBQ Syed Fawad Ali Shah said that on directions of the Member Customs Tariq Huda, strict vigilance was maintained on the consignments being exporting through Port Mohammad Bin Qasim on 31.10.2020 at about 1400 PST, the physical examination of a consignment of M/s Great Taman Lara Sports Company bearing (NTN 1342991) GD No. KPPE-SB-88633 dated 29.10.2020 said to contain 9600 pieces of footballs of “multi-color made of PVC machine artificial leather” was conducted by the staff of Customs Exports Port Mohammad Bin Qasim Karachi.

He said that upon physical examination, huge quantity of drugs concealed in cartons i.e. 18 pouches /carton in the paralled sides of 58 cartons out of 400 cartons having total quantity of 36.2 kilograms has been detected.

In order to confirm the type of the drugs, the assistance of Collectorate of Customs Jinnah International Airport (JIAP), Drug Enforcement Cell, Karachi was sought and they confirmed through testing kits that the said drug was “heroine”.

Collector Export Fawad Ali Shah said that an FIR has been lodged before the special court-II, Control of Narcotics. Substances, Karachi. Four of the five accused persons have been arrested in Karachi whereas the Collectorate’s team has been dispatched to Sialkot to arrest the prime accused. The approximate value of seized heroin is Rs361 million (US$25 million) in international market.

Chief Collector Dr. Saifuddin Jeunjo lauded the efforts of Collector Fawad Ali Shah, and his teams including Additional Collector Tahir Abbas, Additional Collector Moeen Afzal Ali, Deputy Collector Amjad Aman, Appraising Officers Abdul Jabbar and Ahmad who were instrumental in effecting the seizure in most professional manner.
