Customs Preventive holds smuggled goods worth Rs 272m

KARACHI: The Model Custom Collectorate Preventive making a second biggest seizure, has confiscated contraband goods including cell phones, perfumes, LED TVs, refrigerators etc worth Rs 272.82 million.

In this operation, the Customs Preventive busted a group, which used to smuggle goods of high slab duty into Pakistan through illegal routes in order to avoid duty/taxes causing loss to national kitty.

Earlier, it had detected one of the biggest ever seizure of merchandise valuing at Rs 304 millions in October, 2015.

This was revealed by Customs Enforcement-South Chief Collector Zahid Khokhar, while talking to media at Karachi Port Trust, adding that customs officers seized smuggled goods with proofs by making the department proud.

On this occasion, Customs Preventive Collector Tariq Huda told that it was all possible due to the sincere efforts of the customs officers as they have made second biggest seizure of the year at KPT. He said that containers were came into Pakistan from United Arab Emirates (UAE), adding that smugglers tried to use back doors and offered bribe to officers but they denied in larger interest of the country and confiscated the consignment.

Tariq Huda told that smugglers and clearing agents were involved in this matter, while customs had lodged FIR against the accused persons. . The FIR number is ASO-181/2015 dated December 07, 2015. He said that two person have been arrest, adding that efforts were underway to arrest other three absconders.

The collector requested the Pakistani nation to verify the customs clearance of imported goods at the time of purchase.
