KARACHI: The Customs Collectorate Preventive seems reluctant to ensure implementation on the Supreme Court’s order regarding enforcement of Urdu language in the official correspondence.

Sources informed Customs Today that the enforcement of Urdu language in official correspondence is something different and hence it could never be enforced in official work. “For instance, we cannot make Urdu of misdeclaration/under invoicing etc while in fact we have to find words for the technical terms before implementing the Urdu,” sources added.

“The aforesaid correspondence/orders are self-speaking, keeping in view the Supreme Court’s directions, it is requested to kindly circulate the same amongst the sections/groups for compliance,” according to a letter. The Supreme Court of Pakistan vide its order dated 8.9.2015 in the Constitutional Petition No 56/2002 and 112/2012 passed following directions. “The provisions of Article 251 shall be implemented with full force and without unnecessary delay by the federal and provincial governments. The federal government as well as provincial governments should coordinate with each other for uniformity in the ‘rasmulkhat’ for the National Language. Federal as well as provincial laws should be translated in the national languages within three months. In the competitive examinations at federal level the recommendations of government bodies noted above should be considered by the government for implementation without unnecessary delay. In the court cases, government departments should make all reasonable efforts to submit their replies in Urdu to enable citizens to effectively enforce their legal rights.”
