Customs Preventive seizes smartphones at Karachi airport

KARACHI: The Model Customs Collectorate (MCC) of Preventive has seized 114 smartphones of latest models worth Rs 5 million from a passenger at the Karachi airport.

MCC-Preventive Assistant Collector Engr Mukhtar A Shaikh informed Customs Today that a passenger tried to bring expensive cell phones from Dubai, including BlackBerry, iPhones, S4 Galaxy, S5 Galaxy and others, but the timely action by the customs officials thwarted his attempt.

He further said that the MCC-Preventive has detected around 200 such cases during the last six months and seized hundreds of cell phones from ‘Khapiyas’, a term used in Karachi for those who bring goods from foreign countries illegally.

To a query, the assistant collector said that these ‘Khapiyas’ were using green channel facility to carry lots of cell phones and other electronic accessories.
