Customs Preventive submits FIR of betel nuts smuggling case in court

KARACHI: Customs Collectorate Preventive submitted in court the first information report (FIR) against unknown persons, who were involved in a case of attempting to smuggle non-duty paid betel nuts and other contraband goods.

On August 27, 2018, Tariq Mahmood, complainant submitted the FIR before the court and informed that an actionable information was received to the effect that a considerable quantity of smuggled/contraband non-duty paid foreign-origin betel nuts, gutka and cigarettes were dumped/concealed at storage places in the premises at 11/63, Jodia Bazar, Karachi and likely to be removed from that said premises shortly.

He submitted that pursuant to said information a team reached the spot along with law enforcement agencies as precautionary measures to avoid any law & order situation but no one came near the dumping place in presence of customs team with the danger of their apprehension.

He further informed the court that during the search, they found 108 PP bags each containing 5400 packets and further each packet containing 90 pouches of Shikhar brand Indian origin gutka total 486,000 pouches valuing at Rs7,290,000, 25 PP bags each weighing 80 kilogram containing betel nuts total weighing 2000 kilogram worth Rs492,000, 3 bundles containing 143 cartons/dandas of Bensons & Hedghes (Blue Gold) cigarettes made in London valuing at Rs114,400, 2 bundles of foreign polyester fabric Georgette (ladies cloths) 2640 yards 132 kilogram valuing at Rs81,180, 2 rules of foreign origin curtain cloths 154 yards 66 kilogram worth Rs40,590 total value of said goods are Rs8,018,170.

He said that investigations are under way and no accused has been arrested yet and whenever the accused would be arrested they will be produced before the court. After the hearing, court taken FIR into court record and directed him to complete investigation and submit charge-sheet on next date of hearing.
