WELLINGTON: An 18-year-old Chinese man has been arrested after Customs officers intercepted a courier parcel containing $1 million-worth of methamphetamine.

Police say they’re working closely with authorities in Hong Kong to identify those involved in the importation.

The arrested man is in New Zealand on a visitor’s visa and will appear in the Wellington District Court on Friday, charged with importation of a class A controlled drug and conspiracy to supply a class A controlled drug.

“Due to some excellent border security implemented by New Zealand Customs we detected this offending and were able to commence an investigation that has led to this arrest,” says Detective Senior Sergeant Tim Leitch, head of the Wellington organised crime team.

“Though the methamphetamine was concealed to try and avoid law enforcement, New Zealand Customs have again shown that through vigilance and having quality systems in place significant seizures can be made. This is helping keep New Zealanders safe.”
