TUMPAT: State anti-smuggling customs commander, Rusli Karim, said that latest tactics used by smugglers to bring cigarettes into Kelantan was foiled when customs seized 9,500 cartons of cigarettes worth almost RM1.4mil.
Rusli said that three raids were conducted at Kampung Bunut Payong and Pasir Tumboh at 5am based on information obtained through surveillance.
“The first raid intercepted a van carrying 2,500 cartons of the contraband at Kampung Bunut Payong worth RM292,320 including taxes,” said Rusli.
He added that the anti-smuggling unit then stumbled upon a van loaded with 3,500 carton of cigarettes at Pasir Tumboh worth RM408,660.
“Another 3,500 cartons of cigarettes worth RM408,660 was found abandoned by there roadside at Pasir Tumboh,” said Rusli at a press conference on Monday.
Rusli added that it was believed the cigarettes were brought in from the West Coast to be sold in Kelantan.
He also said that the syndicates had the services of informants, adding that this prompted them to break into three groups to ensure one would make it through the dragnet.
“We got wind of their new tactics and managed to seize all the contraband cigarettes,” said Rusli.
He added the case was being investigated under Section 135 of the Customs Act 1967 and that all contraband was being handed to the Customs and Excise Department for further action.
