NEW DELHI: Airport customs authorities caught a 57-year-old man and his son who were smuggling gold worth Rs 5 lakh from Malaysia into the city. The passenger arrived from Kuala Lumpur in an Air india Express flight.
Rashid Khan of Manamelkudi and his son Monsoor, 32, had hidden 200g of gold in a shampoo bottle and passed the metal scanner without getting detected. However, officials became suspicious after Manamelkudi gave an unusual signal to his son. They were booked for smuggling and the seized gold was sent to court.
Manamelkudi works as a labourer there, and one of his colleagues had lured him into gold smuggling. In many cases, people from rural areas have fallen prey to peddlers, who promise good money for smuggling. Even when investigated it gives blind leads as the mafia operates from somewhere else, said air Intelligence officials.
