COLOMBO: Sri Lanka Customs officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport this morning arrested a passenger who was attempting to smuggle in foreign cigarettes illegally.
The passenger, who had arrived from Kuwait through Dubai in early hours of Monday had concealed the cigarettes in his baggage. He has attempted to leave through the Green Channel, which is for passengers with nothing to declare and the Custom officials who became suspicious of him had found 125 cartons of cigarettes upon checking his luggage. The Customs say the value of the cigarettes is over 1.2 million rupees. The suspect, a 28 year old resident of Panadura has been fined Rs. 25,000 and the cigarettes have been confiscated.
