LONDON: Drugs worth £2.6 million have been seized by Customs officers over the last 12 months, statistics show – eclipsing the total for the previous period by hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Seizures of the class-B drug cannabis made up almost all of the haul with a street value of £2.5 million – £1 million more than the preceding 12 months.

The figures relate to the period between the end of July this year and the start of August 2015. By comparison, Customs seized £2.2 million in drugs for the same period in 2014/2015.

In a brief statement the department said it continued to work with the UK Border Force and National Crime Agency and maintain strong working relations with the Guernsey Border Agency and French Customs, which helps them track individuals and organised crime groups who try to flood the Island’s streets with narcotics, while Assistant Home Affairs Minister Deidre Mezbourian said the figures were evidence of Customs’ hard work and dedication.
