Customs Valuation starts work to control undervaluation of Indian goods: Tanveer Ahmed

KARACHI: Directorate General of Customs Valuation has started special exercise to control undervaluation of goods imported from India.

Talking to Customs Today, Director General Syed Tanveer Ahmed said that the department has started a special exercise to cope with consignments of Indian goods being imported through Dubai. He said that on the complains of the sewing machines industry, the value of the machines has been increased.

The director general said that in the first phase the survey of some forty Indian items has been completed successfully by the director of Customs Valuation, Lahore whereas the values of some goods have been fixed while value of thirty items will be fixed within a week.

Ahmed said that a number of Indian goods are being imported through Dubai in the garb of Chinese goods thus flouting the import policy and also hurting the local industry causing loss of millions of rupees to country.

Giving an example, he said that silk industry of Gujranwala, Karachi and Lahore which is on the verge of closure due to illegal import of Indian chiffon containers. This was being cleared at $2 to $3 per kilogramme and now the value has been increased to $7/kg.
