MANILA: The Bureau of Customs said Friday it would ensure justice for deputy commissioner Arturo Lachica, who was killed in an ambush. Customs Commissioner Nicanor Faeldon said he instructed their intelligence and enforcement units to assist and support the agencies investigating the case. “I am optimistic that the truth, as well as the perpetrators of this heinous crime, will soon be exposed,” he said in a statement. Lachica was gunned down while on his way home along España Boulevard in Manila on Thursday. He was declared dead-on-arrival at the United Doctors Medical Center. “Just yesterday, he was very active in our roadmap discussions,” Faeldon said.
Lachica is a lawyer and certified public accountant who has been with the bureau for two years. During this time, he was active in filing cases against alleged smugglers, according to the BOC. Faeldon has instructed that the Philippine flag at the BOC be flown at half-mast to show respect for Lachica.
