Customs Wagah arrests passenger for attempting to smuggle Rs 225,000 to India

LAHORE: Customs Railway Station Wagah has seized Rs 225,000 from an Indian citizen who visited his relatives in Karachi and was travelling back to India via the same route.

On Monday, the Customs authorities were checking the luggage of passengers who were to leave for India when one of the passengers, Farhan Rahat, 52, was assessed as perplexed by the customs authorities.

The customs authorities searched his luggage and recovered Rs 225,000. The accused was arrested and his currency was seized as he was trying to smuggle the currency from Pakistan to India.

They said that upon asking, the accused failed to satisfy the customs authorities and was held.

Sources, however, said that the accused was a poor man and visited his relatives in Karachi, Pakistan where his relative helped him with the money in order to use the money on the marriage of one of his five daughters.

As per law it is prohibited to carry Pakistani currency more than Rs 3000, however, $10,000 are allowed by to be carried with passengers.

The Customs I&P authorities Tuesday produced the accused before special judge Customs where he was sent to jail on judicial remand for 14 days.
