Steps being taken to curb smuggling through airports: Idrees Qureshi

FAISALABAD: Assistant Collector Idress Qureshi has directed the staff to take strict measures in order to curb smuggling through airport.

Qureshi told Customs Today that the staff checked a VIP protocol person Muhammad Bilal, son of Ghulam Murtaza, having passport no, AB3707324 and recovered six bottles of foreign origin alcohol and 66 mobile phones from him. The estimated value of the phones and alcohol is Rs 1.89 million. The deputy collector said that alcohol and mobiles phone were seizes under section 168 of Customs Act 1969. The passenger arrived at Faisalabad airport through Flight No, G90843 from Sharjah.

The customs team consisted of Superintendent Muhammad Javeed Mehmood, Inspectors Shahid iqbal, Masood Saeed Chauhan, and Muhammad Yousaf and sepoy Ghulam Ghous.

Qureshi said that the suspect was carrying alcohol of Jack Daniel’s, Absolute Raspberry, Absolute Grape, Baileys, absolute Vanilla, and Arak Hadda brands. The mobile phones recovered from him included Iphone Apple 7 new (18- nos), Iphone 7 plus (4- nos), Samsung Galxy S7 Edge (4- nos), I phone 5  (20- nos) and of other brands. It was found that the passenger was carrying these items without having any valid purchase invoice.

The AFU seized mobile and liquored and served a notice under section 171 of the Customs Act 1969 and delivered upon the passenger accused.

Further said that Idress Qureshi said that he had adopted zero tolerance policy to curb smuggling and against the transportation of illegal goods at Faisalabad airport. The deputy collector instructed all AFU customs staff that they should check all visitors and VIP protocol thoroughly during their entry premises where the name and completed address of all that type of person with phone number and CNIC number must be registered.

He delivered a message to AFU staff that the negligence of checking passenger and security matters arrangements will not tolerate rather all AFU staff should take high alert during duty hours. He said the employees must followed duty timing strictly. He said with the co ordination of Anti narcotics force (ANF) and others secret sources collect information about visitors on daily basis.

Idrees Qureshi said that i had paid special attention to boost the Air fright unit (AFU), performance at Faisalabad International Airport. Resultantly, there has been a marked improvement in the performance every month.”

He added, “No doubt we are working hard and successfully collecting the revenue more than the target set by Federal Board of Revenue ( FBR ).

He further said Customs Collector Choudhary Zulifkar Ali was always busy in motivating and preparing customs officers to obtain maximum results. This is why we are successful in generating revenue above the set target every month.
