Demurages, detention issue: PM, commerce & finance minister asked to intervene to ensure free time amid COVID-19

LAHORE: Friends of Economic Business Reforms (FEBR) President Kashif Anwar has said that it is very surprising that despite numerous requests and intimation no concrete action has been taken either by the government or by Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to ensure free demurages and detention charges.

He was talking to  Customs  Today here on Thursday.

He said that the Karachi customs authorities have again directed terminal operators including the Cargo Manager, Shaheen Shed, JIAP, Karachi, the Cargo Manager, Mis Gery’s Dnata Shed, JIAP, Karachi, the Cargo Manager, Royal Shod JIAP, Karachi the General Manager,Gv) PIA Shed, JIAP, Karachi and the Cargo Manager, DHL Shed, JIAP, Karachi to implement the further 15 free days extension amid the world pandemic COVID-19, but sadly no implementation is seen on the directions.

The Terminal Operators have been continue  doing away with the Federal Board of Revenue instructions of not charging demurrages and detentions for further 15 days amid COVID-19.

He said that the business community is not in position to bear the burden of additional costs at the critical time when all the businesses are shutdown and cash flows are also disturbed.

“Businessmen have always preserved their money in shape of investment and in the current situation investments are also stuck up and they are facing shortages of funds. Additional demurrage and detention charges means adding insult to the injury, ” Anwer highlighted.
