DG-I&I seizes smuggled black tea worth Rs25m

KARACHI: The Directorate General, Intelligence and Investigation (DGI&I) raided a warehouse situated here in Judia Bazaar and seized 48 tonnes of smuggled black tea, worth said to be more than Rs25 million in the market.

According to a press release, the Directorate General, Intelligence and Investigation (DGI&I) was tipped off that a huge quantity of smuggled black tea had been stored in a warehouse in Judia Bazaar.

Acting on the tip-off, Director Customs Intelligence Asif Marghoob Siddiqui constituted a team comprising Deputy Director Dr Ahsan Khan and senior intelligence officer Mohammad Aslam to conduct an operation for the recovery of the contraband.

According to the officials, the black tea was smuggled into the country through Afghan Transit Trade. In the joint operation, the customs and Rangers personnel seized the huge quantity of smuggled black tea.

It is to be noted that it was the third biggest seizure of smuggled tea by the customs authorities during the current month.
