HYDERABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Karachi organized an awareness seminar in collaboration with Character Building Society of Mehran University of Engineering Technology in Jamshoro on Friday.
The event titled ‘Role of Youth In Prevention of Corruption’ was addressed by Director General (DG) NAB Mohammad Altaf Bawany, Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Aslam Uqaili and Pro Vice Chancellor while the faculty members, officials and students attended.
Speaking on the occasion, the DG NAB highlighted the role of youth in eradication of corruption from the society. He said a society where corruption becomes a sub-culture needed the fresh blood with quality of mind and thought to come forward and contribute in the nation building.
He observed that the majority of Pakistan’s population consists of youth who had the power to shape the future. “The educational institutions are very much part of our struggle to root out corruption and responsibility heavily lay on the shoulders of teachers to purge this society of the menace of corruption, nepotism and culture of bribery by training the youth and imparting education.”
Emphasizing on the impact of corruption prevention, Bawany said besides enforcement of law by the investigating corruption cases and sending them up for trial in court, prevention part serves as very effective check over corruption before an offense was committed.
“Awareness amongst youth had globally proved to be effective preventive strategy that has borne results,” he pointed out.
The DG also stressed upon the participants of various walks of life over the need to jointly contribute in the struggle by joining hands against corruption.
“Without participatory and concerted efforts it isn’t possible to rid our society of this cancer,” he observed.
Bawany while responding to questions said the NAB’s references were based on strong and irrefutable evidence against the culprits. Therefore, conviction rates at around 76 percent were one of the highest among the investigating agencies, he added.
He told that the Chairman NAB Justice ® Javed Iqbal had geared up the drive to receive more and more complaints against the corrupt officials for which public hearings had been initiated.
In that regard, he added that a hearing was conducted in Karachi the other day and more such hearings would be conducted on regular basis.
