DG NAB Najaf Mirza leads walk to mark day against corruption

KARACHI:  Director General National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Karachi Dr Najaf Quli Mirza led an awareness walk to mark International Anti-Corruption Day under the United Nations Convention Against Corruption, which was attended by a large number of people from all walks of life on Tuesday.

Carrying banners inscribed with slogans against corruption, the participants walked on the road from the Chunky Monkey amusement park to A K Khan Park at Sea View.

Mirza extended gratitude to the participants and highlighted the importance of public awareness of the adverse effects of corruption. He said the NAB Karachi had geared up its operations against corruption and had been performing exceptionally well from the past few years. Under the dynamic vision and guidance of Chairman NAB retired Justice Javed Iqbal, NAB Karachi had remained successful in achieving the confidence of the public at large.

He said a heavy responsibility lay on the shoulders of the youth to become part of the struggle to root out corruption. NAB had formed character-building societies at schools, colleges and universities with the spirit to raise awareness among the students against corruption, he said, adding that the teachers should also play their role actively to eliminate the menace of corruption, nepotism and favoritism from the society.

Mirza appreciated the role of the media, especially in the field of investigative journalism that had exposed several cases of corruption. He said all segments of the society would have to join hands and take forward the mission of NAB to make Pakistan corruption-free.

It is also pertinent to mention here that Director-General (DG) Najaf Quli Mirza conducted an inquiry into the illegally carving out land in the surroundings of Mazar-e-Quaid and Karachi chapter is given special instructions in this regard. Najaf Quli Mirza has taken up high-profile corruption cases in Sindh after his posting as Karachi NAB DG by the NAB Chairman. After taking charge as DG NAB Karachi, Najaf Mirza has accelerated the process of eliminating the menace of corruption and recorded a big achievement in a mega corruption case of Fazaia Housing Scheme by arresting Ch Tanvir of Maxim Group & his son Bilal.

The fake accounts investigation took an interesting turn after Najaf Quli Mirza, joined the top anti-corruption watchdog to quickly probe the multi-billion scam by assisting the Combined Investigation Teams (CITs) engaged to file all 16 references by Jan 2020.

Mirza was the first officer who started the probe into the fake accounts case soon after the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) took up the case in November 2015 on the request of Financial Monitoring Unit (FMU).

DG Najaf Mirza also recommended NAB to convert an Inquiry against former Sindh IG Ghulam Haider Jamali into an investigation. He and others were accused of accumulating assets beyond their known means of income.

DG NAB Karachi Dr Najaf Quli Mirza directed took a view of inquiries, investigations and various other operational matters. He  also approved a reference against Pir Fareed Jan Sarhandi, then SSP Hyderabad, and others on charges of illegally appointing 378 Police Constables in District Hyderabad.
