Diesel Smuggling: Customs Court orders proclamation of absconder

KARACHI: Customs Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi directed the investigation officer to start proceedings against and absconder namely as Sher Jan for his proclamation in a case of attempting to smuggle 60,000 liters of Iranian diesel including 500 liters of mixed black oil.

During the hearing, accused Naseer Ahmed, special public prosecutor Shoukat Ali Qureshi, Investigation Officer Khair Muhammad were present before the court. The investigation officer produced and unserved report of non-bailable warrants against the absconder. The court directed the statement of investigation officer be recorded regarding absconding accused. The case was adjourned until September 17, 2016.

According to the prosecution, the Customs Anti-Smuggling Organisation (ASO), Hyderabad intercepted an oil tanker bearing registration number TLZ-298 loaded with 60,000 liters of Iranian diesel and 500 liters of mixed black oil. The diesel and black oil were allegedly brought into Pakistan illegally for its disposal in local market.

After fulfilling all formalities, the ASO officials seized the goods along with oil tanker worth Rs 2.42 million and evaded duty and taxes amounting to Rs 1.546 million. The case was registered as an offence punishable under section 156 (1) (8) (89) of the Customs Act, 1969.
