Director Irfan Javed’s Customs I&I foils bid to smuggle goods worth Rs102m

KARACHI:  Directorate of Customs Intelligence and Investigation (I&I) team foiled an attempt to smuggle huge quantity of non-duty paid goods and registered a cases against M/s A-One Steel, M/s Royal Steel, M/s New Aijaz Engineering and others for smuggling of galvanized steel coils (secondary quality) and causing big revenue loss to the national exchequer.

According to sources, Director Irfan Javed received information that foreign origin smuggled and non-duty paid steel coils are dumped at M/s M.A. Chaudhry Goods Transport Company and M/s Kissan goods Transport Company at Hawksbay Road for its transportation to up-country.

He immediately constituted a anti-smuggling squad to recover these smuggled goods. The I&I team raided M/s M.A. Chaudhry Goods Transport Company and M/s Kissan goods Transport Company and found a large number of steel coils lying there suspected to be smuggled and non-duty paid.

In this regard detention notices were served upon M/s M.A. Chaudhry Goods Transport Company and M/s Kissan goods Transport Company with the direction to provide all legal and relevant import documents in support of legal import, lawful possession, purchase and transportation of detained goods.

During scrutiny of documents it was revealed that the godown’s owner transpired that the goods coils belonged to M/s. New Aijaz Engineering, M/s Royal Steel and M/s A-One Steel. These importers colluded and submitted bogus documents to hide true ownership and status of smuggled goods.

Customs Intelligence and Investigation Karachi established that M/s New Aijaz Engineering, M/s Royal Steel and M/s A-One Steel and other associates in crime have smuggled foreign origin steel coils worth Rs102 million. The goods have been seized and investigations are underway.
