Dubai Court sentences woman 10 yrs jail for smuggling 4.5kg cocaine

DUBAI: A 42-year-old woman will spend 10 years in jail after being caught carrying more than four kilograms of cocaine in her underwear through Dubai International Airport.

OM confessed to a charge of smuggling drugs when she appeared at the Dubai Criminal Court last month. Airport staff noticed the Zambian was walking heavily when she arrived at the airport on April 16 this year.

“She seemed tense and scared so I stopped her and asked my female colleague to search her,” testified Yemeni policeman QA, 37.

QA said OM was wearing a corset in which she had hidden some of the drugs and some more in her underwear.

“She confessed but she said she didn’t know what type of drugs they were. She was to carry them from Brazil to Zambia in return for US$5,000,” added the policeman.

Prosecutors said OM was carrying 4.5kgs of cocaine.

She was fined Dh50,000 and will be deported after serving her jail term.
