DUBAI: Four people have been arrested and four international cocaine smuggling operations foiled with the help of Dubai Customs.

Col Eid Mohammed Thani Hareb, head of the force’s anti-narcotics department, said the suspects attempted to smuggle seven kilograms of the drug from South America in April and May.

“Smugglers were arrested red-handed in Abuja and Lagos in Nigeria, Johannesburg in South Africa, and Istanbul,” said Col Hareb. “Three men and one woman were taken into custody based on the accurate information with which we provided the relevant authorities.”

“They used different methods to try to smuggle the drugs, including putting them in secret compartments in their bags and clothes as well as in their stomachs.”

Col Hareb stressed the importance of international cooperation in combating drug smuggling. He did not elaborate on Dubai’s role in the investigation and arrests.
