DUBAI: Dubai Customs is gearing up to unveil its Knowledge Assets Registration Project, which has reportedly been designed to help the organisation protect its intellectual property rights for inventions and creations. Describing the safeguarding of intellectual property rights as an important catalyst for the advancement of creativity and innovation, Dubai Customs expressed its commitment to ensuring that its innovators and creative personnel are protected and that they have legal recourse against any infringement of their rights. Yousef Ozair Mubarak, director of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Department of Dubai Customs, told Dubai Media Office: “IPR Department has completed the preliminary phase of the Knowledge Assets Registration Project, which included devising relevant methodologies, policies, and procedures as well as training IPR staff on the process of registering knowledge assets.” He added: “These intellectual property assets are globally classified into two main categories: industrial property, which includes patents for inventions, trademarks, and industrial designs; and copyright, which covers literary, scientific, artistic, media, and publishing works.”

Dubai Customs has started an internal awareness campaign that highlights the importance of identifying, capturing, and maintaining knowledge assets and how the registration process work. “We coordinate efforts with all internal stakeholders to make sure best practices are applied in information gathering, documentation, and completion of applications for registration of our knowledge assets with the relevant body – the Ministry of Economy. This is to ensure that all of Dubai Customs’ innovations have registered patents that can officially protect our intellectual property,” said Mubarak.
