CAIRO: Cairo International Airport authorities foiled an attempt by two passengers to smuggle 820,000 Saudi Riyal and United Arab Emirates Dirham outside Egypt, Youm7 reported Friday.
Security services department at the airport suspected a Saudi passenger, and after inspecting his luggage, some 720,000 SR ($191,966) were found in his possession.
The bags of a Bahraini passenger, who is heading to Dubai on board of an Egypt Air flight, were also inspected by the customs officials who found 100,000 AED ($27,226) inside them.
Director of Airport Security Tariq Fathy ordered that the two passengers receive their legal limit of money ($10,000) which they are allowed to carry on, either on arrival or departure from Cairo. The rest of the money will be confiscated, according to Fathy.
The customs department at the Cairo Airport has recently stopped several attempts to smuggle drugs, money, artifacts.
Airport authorities arrested a Dutch passenger, who is of Egyptian descent, over attempting to smuggle “huge amount of narcotic pills and eight grams of marijuana” inside chocolate boxes.
Three passengers, including a Libyan national, are being investigated for smuggling a huge shipment of silver artifacts worth 200,000 EGP ($25,550) and not paying the customs value of 400,000 EGP.
