WASHINGTON: Entrepreneur and freaky genius, Elon Musk has made a formal request to launch 4,000 satellites into space, to bring Wi-Fi to the most remote locations on earth.
Initially made public in June this year, the SpaceX founder has been formulating the plan for quite some time, and it has now officially requested permission from US body, the Federal Communications Commission.
The Independent reports that if Musk’s proposal is successful, the service could be working in about five years. If approved, the testing could begin as soon as next year.
Similar, big budget projects have been attempted in the past by visionaries including Richard Branson and Bill Gates, but it is Musk’s proposal that is bringing fresh hope, due to the fact that he has the resources to run it independently through SpaceX.
