ATHENS: avramopoulos32.74 million euros of aid will soon arrive in Athens from Brussels to cope with the refugee crisis, said European Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos on Friday.
A first disbursement of 30 million euros will take place as soon as the Tsipras government makes the aid management authority operative. 2.74 million euros will be added as emergency funds (which the European Commission is working on) to support UNHCR in giving arrival and reception aid to immigrants on the Greek islands.
Greece will trigger the EU’s Civil Protection Mechanism for providing immediate humanitarian assistance to immigrants in the Eastern Aegean Islands, Avramopoulos said, speaking about the aid plan agreed to yesterday with the Greek authorities for handling the high influx of immigrants.
