Talking to reporters in his office, PRGMEA Chairman Ejaz A Khokhar urged the government to evolve a comprehensive strategy to ensure hurdle-free supply of gas to value-added textile sector. Khokhar said the value-added textile industry was not getting the raw material from the processing industry due to which the wheel of the textile industry has come to a halt.

He said that hundreds of small and medium industrial units have been lying closed due to the non-availability of gas, raw material and delay in the payment of refund claims by the government.

He added that several units were willing to run after getting energy through other resources in a bid to avert the severe financial crisis. Khokhar revealed that big industrial units were also not getting orders due to their inability to dispatch the consignments to the foreign destinations in the stipulated time given by the foreign buyers.

He said that the Federal Textile Industry Ministry was being run without any textile policy. He said the federal government had miserably failed in ensuring provision of gas and electricity to industries in Punjab.

He said that ready-made garments exporters were facing non-availability of casual and fashion wear material as the wheel of value-added textile industry has come to a grinding halt in Punjab.

He suggested that the government should allow duty-free import of raw material if it could not provide gas to the processing industry and value added textile industry.

The PRGMEA chairman demanded that the government form a committee of all stakeholders under the supervision of the Federal Textile Industry Ministry to resolve the prolonged issues amicably.
