BERLIN: Germany trade surplus reached 216.9 billion euros in 2014, soundly beating a previous record from 2007 of 195.3bn euros, the German Statistics Office reported. Total exports equalled e1.13 trillion as compared with imports valued at e916.6bn.

The actual trade surplus is slightly lower than first estimates of e217bn. Further revisions of the numbers were expected throughout the year with a final estimate expected in October, the Statistics Office said. The overall trend for 2014, however, is not expected to change. And economists expect the trend to continue into 2015, with German products selling well around the world, helped in part by a weakened euro.
