Extra sales tax on petroleum prices challenged in LHC

LAHORE: Extra sales tax and raise in prices of petroleum products challenged in the Lahore High Court (LHC) by the Azhar Saddique the chairperson of Activism Panel.

The counsel for the petitioner, while arguing before the court, submitted that the federal government could not impose sales tax on petroleum products.

He argued that the prices of petroleum products decreased besides but the government has increased the prices of petroleum in Pakistan. Due to raise in the petroleum products prices the inflation rate going to up in the country.

In the petition appellant appeal to the Lahore High Court to order the government to stop the extra sales tax collection on the petroleum products because, extra collection of sales tax is burden on public.

The raise in the prices of petroleum products is violation of Article 18 and 14(9) of constitution of Pakistan, appellant mentioned.

In the petition complainant sought reply from federal government, Oil and Gas Regularity Authority (OGRA). He also prayed the court to declare extra sales tax on petroleum products as illegal and null and void.
