CALIFORNIA: Facebook has taken a cue from WhatsApp and popular video messaging platform Skype and created a web browser version of its Messenger app. This service is basically a large screen variant of its smartphone application that is available on mobile platforms like Android, iOS and Windows Phone. To get started, you must log-in with your Facebook ID and your job is pretty much done. You get the same app design on your browser along with the option of sending stickers, photos and emojis. Unlike WhatsApp for Web this service isn’t beamed from your smartphone and it works on all browsers. You might recall that WhatsApp for Web is currently supported by Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera and Safari. The surprise addition in the messenger domain is the option to make voice and video calls.
The reason we aren’t particularly impressed by this service is because it’s unnecessary. Unlike mobile apps of Facebook where the social networking giant has separated the messages section into a separate app, you can still access your messages on the Facebook [dot] com domain with the exact same features. You might also recall how Facebook had shut down its desktop and Firefox messengers a year back when it noticed that they were being seldom used because users could access the same feature on the desktop website. The only upside is that you no longer have to type into your small smartphone screen and you get to do all the stuff on a familiar tangible keyboard.
