Faisalabad I&I-IR Director Azam vows to curb tax evasion in region

FAISALABAD: Directorate of Intelligence and Investigation-Inland Revenue Faisalabad detected tax evasion cases of millions of rupees on account of sales tax and income tax and issued many contravention and investigation reports to respective Regional Tax Offices (RTOs) during last thirteen months.

Talking to Customs Today I&I-IR Faisalabad Director Muhammad Azam said that the earnest efforts were being made to curb tax evasion in the region and no stone will be left unturned to bring the tax fraudsters to table. He further reiterated that stern measures were being taken to eradicate malpractices within the directorate.

Director Muhammad Azam also praised the Director General Intelligence & Investigation-IR Haroon M.K. Tareen, for his kind supervision and continuous support.

As per detail, I&I-IR issued almost 140 contravention reports pertaining to Income Tax evasion of Rs 1047.6 million to respective RTOs, besides sending the 21 contravention reports regarding the evasion of Sales Tax amounting to Rs1716.18 million during said period.

Directorate has registered 15 First Information Reports (FIRs) and arrested 16 persons involved tax frauds/evasion since the appointment of the Director Muhammad Azam.

Moreover, the Directorate of I&I has also proposed blacklisting/suspension proceedings against companies involved in fake transactions, in 30 tax fraud cases to respective field formations of Federal Board of Revenue. About 97 companies were proposed for compulsory tax registration those were not registered under the Sales Tax Act 1990 despite falling in the category to taxpayers.

Similarly, a number of gangs involved in sales tax fraud have been busted by I&I-IR Faisalabad.

Regional Tax Offices of Faisalabad and Sargodha falls in the jurisdictions of the Directorate of I&I-IR Faisalabad. Besides, Director Muhammad Azam is also maintaining the additional charge of Directorate Intelligence & Investigation, Multan having jurisdiction over Regional Tax Offices of Multan and Bahawalpur.

It is worth mentioning that the core functions of the Directorate include: a) investigation so as to determine the possible loss of revenue or the real revenue potential in cases as identified by the organization; b) Cross matching for the purposes of countering non-reporting and under reporting; c) Discreet information gathering on all Tax related issues, Non reporting, under reporting, tax evasion, connivance between tax evaders and tax collectors, fiscal fraud, and Revenue leakages and to take prompt actions against tax evaders and fraudsters; d) Broadening of tax base aiming at netting potential tax payers; and e) complaints handling, among others.
