LONDON: If you are buying the physical release of Fallout 4 don’t expect the full game files to be included. This may be a trend that is set to continue for many of the big releases heading to the PC.
The fact that the full game won’t be on the disc was confirmed by Bethesda’s Pete Hines on Twitter:
As with what happened with Metal Gear Solid 5 it looks like Fallout 4 will have the Steam installer on the disc and very little else, though some game files may be made available. The bulk of the game will be downloaded from Steam.
This will be a disappointment to many as buying the physical release is a way to escape the problem of internet download caps and slow speeds. The fact that the standard way to release games on the PC is still on DVD for physical releases and not Blu-ray makes it costly for game companies. Maybe if this was changed to Blu-ray it wouldn’t be so much of an issue.
With this announcement we also know that the game will have to be activated through Steam. This is no surprise as it is almost the defacto way to activate games now, unless the games are purchased using another service such as EA’s Origin, GOG Galaxy or Ubisoft’s Uplay. I’m sure most won’t have an issue with the Steam activation though.
